- Connect your device to your smartphone and launch the Smart Asthma app.
- Make sure you’re standing in a well-lit area and that you’re not covering the top window.
- Press Start and when the app tells you to blow, take a deep breath.
- Put the device into your mouth and close your lips to form a seal around the mouthpiece and blow as hard and fast as you can out of your mouth. Keep the device still during the measurement to prevent the propeller from moving accidentally.
- Read the result on your screen and repeat two more times to get a total of 3 measurements. The app will only save the highest.

Yes, a difference in readings is expected for first time users. Our peak flow meter was proven to be more accurate than mechanical ones, so there is always a chance that your previous device was not as precise. If you are using a mechanical peak flow meter, it is possible that the internal parts may not be moving as well as they used to, giving a lower result. Conversely, if the internal parts are worn down this could lead to giving higher values. As to which to trust, that is up to you.
Here you can find a research on the accuracy of a number of peak flow meters: https://bmcpulmmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12890-019-0837-3
However, we recommend that you stick to using one meter for consistent results. This allows you to detect changes in peak expiratory flow (PEF) intensity over a specific period in a reliable way.
SMART RESCUE
Yes, if your phone has NFC capabilities. It is the same touch mechanism used for contactless payments.
You can check this in your phone’s connection settings or find information online in the description of your phone model. Also, you can only download the Smart Rescue app to your phone if it has NFC capabilities.
You can use it with MDI type inhalers. The Smart Rescue fits on the top of the inhaler’s canister and its button is pressed upon every inhaler actuation, if used correctly. You can read out the device while it’s on the inhaler.
Smart Rescue has a guaranteed lifespan of 2 years under normal usage conditions. If the device’s battery is running low, the app will notify you.
One Smart Rescue device is intended to be used with one inhaler at a time until it runs out of medication. Simply attach the Smart Rescue to your current inhaler in use you wish to track. When your inhaler runs out, you can transfer the device to a new one. The Smart Rescue has a light sensor on the bottom, so it can detect the transfer and the app will automatically restart the countdown from 200 or from your set number.
The Smart Rescue offers additional benefits beyond counting your remaining puffs. It also tracks the time of each inhaler use, helping you identify triggers and remember if you’ve taken your medication at a specific time. The app generates a daily use chart and predicts when your inhaler will run out based on your current usage patterns, whether you use it with a reliever or preventer MDI type inhaler.
Upon changing to a new inhaler or using the Smart Rescue for the first time, check if your inhaler has a counter, and make sure you enter the number displayed on it when the app asks you where do you want to start counting from.
First, ensure you have removed the battery pull tab without tearing it, as torn pieces can obstruct the battery’s contact and cause errors.
Locate the NFC on your smartphone. You might need to experiment a bit to find the NFC ‘sweet spot.’ You can check your phone’s NFC location online based on your phone model.
When trying to read Smart Rescue, avoid constant device movement around the back of the phone. Instead, remove it and then bring it close again. It is advisable to remove any phone case before attempting to read via NFC to ensure a better connection.
Once you manage to get a reading you need to hold the device there for the next reading too.
For a successful reading, hold the device against the back of the phone near the NFC for at least 3 seconds.
